Options, so many options!

With so many social media platforms to choose from, how do we as journalists and PR professionals determine which platform is best? When it comes to photo and video sharing, is there one platform that is preferable? So many questions arise from this new age of social media in photojournalism and public relations. So what are the answers?

Some social media sites have similar features to each other, which can make it more difficult to decide which sites to use. However, Neil Patel explains that you should be using multiple platforms in your career for a number of reasons. Looking at Snapchat and Instagram, both platforms have “stories,” but which is better for photosharing? According to Neil, both are great for different reasons. These platforms have different audiences; while there is some overlap, Snapchat has a younger audience. Depending on what content you’re sharing, you might prefer to have a younger viewership. Instagram can be great for content that viewers can engage with more, and for an older audience

It is also important to keep in mind that your professional social media accounts should be unified, so content posted on one platform should have corresponding content on the other.

Photojournalists and photographers alike might have some reservations about using social media platforms as a place to share their content. On sites like Facebook and Instagram, shares and reposts and even more shares can be a recipe for disaster for these hardworking people. In all of those reposts and shares, often, attribution can be lost.

However, social media is a way for journalists and PR professionals to reach a broad audience and fast. As I’ve discussed in previous posts, social media can be an incredible valuable tool. Photosharing is a great way to loop people in to your content and get them interested, since so many people are visual. So many people have a habit of just scrolling through social media and not reading everything. If you post visually interesting photos or stories, you’re more likely to have readers on your page.
